Fire Safety

Although Burning Man is seemingly about fire everywhere and living life at the edge, we need to be very careful about fire in our camp. Many of our structures are made of materials that could be really nasty in a fire. Our best solution is preventing fires in the first place.

Soularium When the solarium is full of tents, it is so tightly packed that if a fire were to start, there would be no way of stopping it. For that reason, we do not allow any open flames in the solarium. Candles are absolutely forbidden anywhere in camp and would be seriously stupid to have in a tent. If you desire a candle experience, consider the battery operated candles that are commonly available.

Smoking is highly discouraged in the solarium. Both for fire safety purposes and because many people in camp do not wish to be around tobacco smoke. We understand that there are some smokings you may not want to do in public and may be best done in your own tent. In those instances, please be VERY careful with open flame sources.

There is a fire extinguisher located at the very center of the solarium and another at the entrance.

Kitchen The kitchen is the most likely place for a fire to occur. We have designed the kitchen to keep flammable materials away from the stoves, but there is always the possibility of grease fires. Please watch the video below to fully understand the danger of using water to put out a grease fire:

There are fire extinguishers near each exit of the kitchen and another near the base of the stove in the center.

Chill Dome We may have a catalytic propane heater in the chill dome. It is very important that this heater only be used when the propane cylinder is in the special support box. This box prevents the heater from falling over. Be certain that there is a fire extinguisher close at hand whenever the heater in use. The heater should never be used unattended. If you are the person who lit it, you are responsible for it. Do not leave the dome without shutting it completely off. If there are others in the dome who wish it to remain lit, clearly pass responsibility to them.
