Shower

Shower

The shower is a scaffolding that is a support for solar shower bags.

Building the shower

The shower is built using:

1 3/8" galvanized tubing

swapper fittings

1" x 6" wooden slats as a floor

2" x 4" wooden slat supports

2" x 6" railing/shelves

Little Giant stairs

upper cross piece

vinyl collection funnel

Start by building upper and lower perimeters. The tubes will be 8' long. Two of the fittings for the upper rail will be 3 ways. The lower rails will have some slip tees on them for intermediate legs. Install the intermediary legs and corner legs. Install the feet. Connect the funnel to the collection bucket. Instal the pump and plumbing. Install the pully board on the upper perimeter by dropping it over the 4 way fittings. Tie guy lines to the corner fittings. Make sure all the ropes are in the pulleys. Install 4-10' poles in the upper perimeter and lift it onto the lower perimeter. Install the funnel and catch basin. If not already installed, the catch basin is strapped to the funnel using the slots around its perimeter. Install the sump pump, discharge hose, and float switch. The float switch has a pass-through plug. That means that you plug the float switch into the extension cord and then plug the sump pump into the float switch. The sump pump has a hose screwed onto it and that hose is routed to the grey water tank. Make sure that you use grey water hoses for this installation. Using a small length of pvc pipe and some duct tape, make a toggle at the end of the grey water hose to prevent the hose from jetting out the tank when the pump turns on.Install the deck boards. Screw down the ends of the deck boards. Install the railings using u-bolts that are in the hardware box. Put the stairs in place. Zip Tie the water riser to a shower leg. Make sure there is a drip bucket there.

Using the Shower

There is enough water allocated for each camper to take 2-3 showers while they are on the playa. It is much more efficient with water use if multiple people are showering at once. Begin by filling a solar shower bag with water. If you bring your own shower bag you can leave it out to get warm. If you don't, no worries, The water is tepid and not shockingly cold. You can fill the shower bag using the flexible hose that comes off the water riser. Hook the shower bag on the carabiner clip on one of the ropes dangling from the top of the shower. Hoist it up and jamb the knot in the rope into the slot in the railing. Use the shower by turning the valve on the shower head. Rinse. Turn the water off. Soap up. Rinse again. Done.
